COLLEGEVILLE, Penn. — Well, so much for his “amazing experience” behind bars.
Bill Cosby released a statement from prison in which he referred to himself as a political prisoner. The comedian, who was convicted last year of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman in his Pennsylvania home, lumped himself in with such civil disobedience icons as Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi, according to Page Six.
Cosby also said that he will never feel remorse for his actions.
“My political beliefs, my actions of trying to humanize all races, genders and religions landed me in this place surrounded by barb wire fencing, a room made of steel and iron,” said Cosby in the statement released Wednesday by his spokesman Andrew Wyatt.
“I now have a temporary residence that resembles the quarters of some of the Greatest Political Prisoners – Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Randal Robinson, and Dr. Benjamin Chavis,” Cosby added. “I stand upright as a Political Prisoner and I Smile.”
Earlier this week Wyatt claimed that Cosby said he was having an “amazing experience” during his first months at SCI Phoenix, a prison 30 miles outside of Philadelphia. The 81-year-old actor was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison in September after being found guilty in April of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his home in 2004.
Dozens of women have levied similar accusations against Cosby, but he remained defiant in the statement.
“I, (Mr. Cosby) have ‘no’ remorse and will never have remorse,” he wrote.
He placed the blame on his incarceration on Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele and Judge Steven O’Neill.
“A low-life District Attorney and a corrupt Judge needed me Guilty now,” he continued. “Not for justice, but for their political aspirations.”
Cosby recently was moved to the prison’s general population after previously serving his time in a single-cell unit adjacent to the infirmary, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. He is currently in a single cell without a cellmate.
Wyatt said Cosby has not had any visits from wife Camille nor other family members, and that’s the way Cosby prefers it.
