NEW ORLEANS, La. — The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s office released news of an inmate pulling a shank from a Bible and stabbing three deputies as they attempted to restrain him.

NOLA.com reports that Reginald Pye stood on a table with a Bible in his hands; when ordered to get down, he jumped from table to table and officers called for backup.

As Pye was being restrained, he pulled a shank out from under the Bible and began swinging it, striking two deputies.

Three deputies were reported injured in the altercation, and all were treated for cuts to their arms and bites to their hands. All have been released from the hospital.

Pye is awaiting a mental evaluation. He was originally arrested after attacking a woman and biting her 5-month-old daughter. Now he will be charged with three counts of attempted murder, one count of aggravated battery and one count of aggravated battery on a corrections officer for his actions during the struggle.
