MIAMI — The family of a mentally ill Florida inmate who died after being left for nearly two hours in a hot shower has settled a civil rights lawsuit against the state’s Department of Corrections and others for $4.5 million.

The Miami Herald reports that a settlement notice was filed last week in the case of 50-year-old Darren Rainey.

The settlement comes nearly six years after Rainey’s death, which led to sweeping reforms in Florida’s prison system. It also comes as the state is set to open a new residential prison treatment facility for inmates with mental illnesses. Rainey had schizophrenia.

His daughter, brother and sister filed the lawsuit against the state department, its former medical contractor Corizon, the former warden at Dade Correctional Institution and two corrections officers.
