KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — A correctional officer was fired after crashing a brand-new prisoner transport van into a fence.

WBIR.com reported that the unnamed Knox County CO was fired after an internal investigation was completed. The CO, who was by himself in the vehicle at the time of the crash, was not injured. He ran into a fence at the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility. The van, according to the department, had just been acquired.

“I’m just not going to let people go out there and destroy county property and act like an idiot,” Sheriff Tom Spangler said.

The correctional officer passed field sobriety tests, but later told authorities he had consumed drinks hours before his shift started.
