NEW PORT, Ore. — A thorough search turned up several contraband items inside a Lincoln County Jail inmate’s cell, including a piece of sandpaper officers believe he may have used to make shanks.

KOIN reports that officers found two shanks inside Elliott Joseph Pernice’s cell, one made out of a toothbrush while the other was made out of a comb, and a piece of sandpaper that the inmate had hidden inside a toilet paper roll.

Sandpaper is not issued to inmates, according to Lincoln County Jail deputies. It’s unclear how the inmate obtained the contraband.

Pernice was originally booked for unlawful possession of a firearm in July. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Thursday afternoon.
