New details have emerged surrounding the incident at New Folsom Prison in California on Sunday where a 33-year-old correctional officer was slashed across the throat by an inmate using a razor crafted from a melted toothbrush.

According to Rhonda Carter, a spokesperson from California State Prisons, the incident took place at about 7 p.m. Inmate Jonathan McClaurin, 33, attacked the officer inside one of the maximum-security units and slashed his neck, jaw and ear.

The injured officer, a 3 ½-year veteran of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, was taken to a hospital and later released after getting 68 stitches.

McClaurin is serving a 135-year-to-life sentence from Los Angeles County for three counts of first-degree robbery, vehicle theft and disregard for safety.

He now faces several new charges, including attempted murder of a peace officer, Carter said.

Officials said the attack, which is being considered an attempted murder, is under investigation.

New Folsom Prison, also known as California State Prison-Sacramento, houses more than 3,100 inmates and employs nearly 1,700 people.
