AUBURN, N.Y. — Auburn Correctional Facility is still on lockdown after an inmate fight broke out on July 27.

According to Syracuse.com, the 30-inmate fight began in the prison’s recreation yard. Corrections officers deployed multiple chemical agents to stop the brawl, but inmates continued fighting. Officers fired two warning shots, to which the inmates dispersed and began to follow verbal commands.

No officers were injured and no major injuries were reported. Some inmates received minor injuries.

It’s unclear when the lockdown will be lifted, but officers are conducting a full search of the prison for weapons and contraband.

“Auburn Correctional Facility has been locked down to allow staff to investigate an incident between inmates,” DOCCS spokesperson Thomas Mailey told AuburnPub. “The outcome of the investigation will determine what further actions are necessary.”

An investigation is ongoing.
