CUMBERLAND COUNTY — Broken monitors at the Cumberland County Detention Center have resulted in long waits for people visiting inmates.

“It’s just really, really inconvenient,” said one Fayetteville woman who often visits a friend in the jail. “There’s really not a good time to visit.”

Debbie Tanna, spokeswoman for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, said 16 of the 45 inmate viewing monitors were damaged by a storm about two weeks ago.

“We’re in the process now of buying new monitors,” Tanna said. “We need 20 of them.”

Tanna said the purchase, which will cost about $4,000, has been requested, but there’s no set date to replace the monitors.

“All of this has to be approved through our budget process,” Tanna said. “We have placed the request and are awaiting approval.”

Visiting hours are daily from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Inmates are allowed one visit a day.

Tanna said Thursday morning that the Sheriff’s Office had not received formal complaints about the wait time.
