LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Indiana inmates who attempt to smuggle cell phones into the state’s jails and prisons now have an extra obstacle to get past -- a black lab and its phone-seeking nose.

There are two cell phone detection K-9’s in the state. One is located at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. The second, Port, is based at the Pendleton Correctional Facility. Prison officials say Port has been sniffing for cell phones since 2013. They say phones can be used to coordinate drug deals, run scams or contact victims.

Officials say the program has been working. Hundreds of phones have been confiscated and now the amount of money inmates are willing to pay for a phone has increased.
