AcornVac Vacuum Plumbing Part of an Award-Winning Engineering Design

As Featured in Plumbing Systems and Design: “Escaping the Shackles of Tradition—Green Plumbing Design for the Western Virginia Regional Jail”

Like so many other prisons, the Western Virginia Regional Jail Authority in Salem faced overcrowding. But when engineers and designers set out on a project to build a new jail, they seized the opportunity to go green, and included AcornVac’s Vacuum Plumbing System in their design.

The water savings provided totaled nearly 11 million gallons of water per year, due largely in part to the AcornVac Vacuum Plumbing System. Additionally, with the help of electronic valve control systems, the jail staff is better able to prevent inmates from disrupting operations by toilet fixture abuse or contraband sharing. With this exemplary performance, a LEED innovative design (ID) credit was achieved.

AcornVac was honored to be selected by the Jail Authority and the Roanoke Office of AECOM Technology Corp. as a sole-source supplier for the vacuum plumbing system and fixtures. Because of their achievement, AECOM earned a 2009 Engineering Excellence Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). AcornVac is proud to have collaborated on this project.
