DETROIT — The project and construction managers of the failed Wayne County Jail project are being sued by the county and the Wayne County Building Authority. The lawsuit charges they failed to abide by contractual obligations, leading to about $50 million in cost overruns.

June West, spokeswoman for Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, confirmed the lawsuit Wednesday in a news release. Included as defendants are AECOM Services of Michigan, AECOM Technical Services of Michigan, Ghafari Associates and the Walbridge-dck joint venture.

“The contracts at issue required that any increase to the cost of the project had to be approved by the authority,” the statement said. “Yet the defendants proceeded with design and construction activities that allegedly increased the project’s construction costs by almost $50 million without ever obtaining approval from the authority’s board for such increases.”
