HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. — A funding proposal to expand the county jail into the parking lot next door was hand-delivered in Sacramento on Thursday.

Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Downey said he is confident that the proposal to the California Board of State and Community Corrections to build a multi-story, minimum security housing facility in the lot between Fourth and Fifth streets will be approved.

In addition to 80 new beds, the proposed facility would expand existing program space -- for things like drug and alcohol services -- and be used to house the community corrections resource center.

If approved by the state, the county would be eligible for as much as $19 million in financing under Senate Bill 1022.
