ATLANTA — Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal says his spending plan for the coming financial year will increase the number of inmates leaving prison or county jails with job skills.
Deal’s Tuesday appearance before lawmakers kicked off a week of hearings to review his $47.5 billion spending plan. The plan, released Thursday, also would boost salaries for state workers and gives local school boards money to increase teacher pay.
Deal gave a broad overview of the proposal, highlighting increases to education spending in public schools before drilling down on changes he wants in education at prisons and jails.
Deal’s administration last year asked lawmakers to create charter schools to help inmates earn high school degrees. He wants lawmakers to approve $4.3 million more for state prison education and $1.3 million for county jails.
