The CO was watching over the inmates and joking with them when he lost consciousness

PARKER COUNTY, Texas – Video captured a group of inmates breaking out of their shared cell in an attempt to save the life of a corrections officer.

According to WFAA, the corrections officer was watching over the inmates June 23 and joking with them when he lost consciousness and fell over.

At least eight inmates in the holding cell started calling for help. When no one responded, they broke out of their cell to get the jail staff’s attention – banging on doors and shouting until deputies arrived.

Sgt. Ryan Speegle, who was trying to get a grasp on the situation, ordered the inmates back into their cell for safety as he assessed what was happening. That’s when he saw the CO, who works for a private contractor, on the ground.

The corrections officer had suffered a heart attack. Deputies performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The CO ultimately survived.

“He could have been there 15 minutes before any other staff walked in and found him,” Capt. Mark Arnett told the publication.
