YORK COUNTY, Penn. — An inmate is facing additional charges after assaulting a corrections officer last week.

Susana Sonia Zavala, 26, is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment in the incident on Jan. 17, Fox 43 reports.

Zavala allegedly assaulted York County Prison corrections officer Mara Lee Hamet while she was conducting a security check of Zavala’s cell.

According to police, Hamet noticed blood stains on Zavala’s blanket and asked if she was having her monthly cycle, offering to give her clean blankets. While doing so, she opened Zavala’s cell door and approached her.

The officer says Zavala became irate and ripped the blanket out of her hand, throwing it to the ground. Hamet extended her left arm to distance herself from the inmate, who continued to verbally abuse her. Hamit reached for her radio to call for help, but Zavala allegedly took the radio from her and threw it to the ground.

Zavala then attacked Hamet, hitting her several times in the face. The officer attempted to defend herself but Zavala overpowered her and shoved her head to the ground several times, Hamet told police.

Several officers arrived to separate the inmate and officer after another inmate called for help. Hamet was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Zavala allegedly admitted to assaulting Hamit, claiming she felt “disrespected” by the officer.
