GREENSBURG, Pa. — A Greensburg man will serve up to 23 months in jail for spitting at three corrections officers who guarded him while receiving medical treatment last year at Excela Westmoreland Hospital.
Jamel C. Miles, 23, pleaded guilty Friday to multiple counts of aggravated assault by a prisoner in connection with the incident in October, which came a month after he was arrested for firing a gun during a dispute at a Hempfield apartment complex.
Police said a maintenance worker at Hempfield Heights apartments saw a woman being dragged by her hair on Sept. 13 and attempted to intervene. Officials said Miles later confronted the maintenance worker, threatened to kill him, punched him in the face, grabbed him by the throat and pinned him against a wall.
Police said Miles then pulled a silver revolver from his waistband and fired one shot as the worker attempted to disarm him. No one was struck by the fired round.
Police arrested Miles after shooting him with a TASER.
In court on Friday, Miles also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, two counts of simple assault, making terroristic threats and reckless endangerment in connection with the gun’s discharge and the attack on the maintenance man and another woman at the apartment complex.
Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court Judge Meagan Bilik-DeFazio sentenced Miles to serve nine to 23 months in jail. He will be eligible for parole in June after being given credit for time served since his arrest in September.
