NEW YORK — A corrections officer was seriously injured after an inmate attacked her with a shiv Tuesday.
NYPost.com reported that the inmate attacked the officer while his fellow inmates were eating at the Manhattan Detention Complex. The officer, who was left with a gash from her nose to her mouth, was transported to the hospital to undergo reconstructive surgery.
The other inmates, who witnessed the attack on the officer, beat and punched the inmate so badly that he was also taken to the hospital, according to the report.
Elias Husamudeen, president of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association, wants the district attorney to pursue attempted murder charges against the inmate.
“I’m asking that this inmate be charged with attempted murder,” he said. “Because quite frankly, if not for the other inmates in the housing area, that’s exactly what would have happened.”
