CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina corrections officer was killed in a single-vehicle crash.
WCTI reported that on Friday, 37-year-old Officer Jason Gagnon was attempting to pass a car in a no-passing zone when he lost control of the vehicle in a curve, causing his truck to overturn and hit a tree. Troopers said Gagnon, who wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, was ejected in the crash and died of his injuries.
Authorities said Gagnon was the only person in the vehicle and that no one else was injured.
Jerry Higgins, a spokesperson with N.C. Department of Corrections, said Gagnon was a corrections officer at the Craven Correctional Institution. He had worked for the prison since August 2014.
Higgins said the department will provide help to Gagnon’s family in any way possible. The officer leaves behind a wife and three sons.
