HAGERSTOWN, Md. — An inmate at Roxbury Correctional Institution who assaulted a correctional officer was sentenced to an additional year in prison.

On June 24, 2015, inmate Anthony Meredith slipped out of his handcuffs and punched a corrections officer while staff members tried to place another inmate in his cell.

The Herald Mail Media reported that handcuffs were initially placed on Meredith in the cell door’s cuffing slot, but Meredith slipped out of them when the door was opened and punched a sergeant on the left side of his face.

The sergeant and other staff members then restrained Meredith. Documents said that the sergeant was treated for swelling on his right hand and face; Meredith was treated for bruising to his head.

Meredith was sentenced to an additional year for the assault, which is to be served consecutively after his current sentence for first-degree murder.
