FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. — A Frederick County Adult Detention Center correctional officer died Thursday while working, according to the Frederick County Sheriff’s office.

Correctional Officer First Class James A. El-Shafey died after going into cardiac arrest on duty Thursday, according to a sheriff’s office statement.

The sheriff’s office characterized El-Shafey’s passing as a line-of-duty death. El-Shafey was involved in routine duties when he experienced a medical emergency, according to Maj. Tim Clarke of the sheriff’s office.

El-Shafey, 25, of Hagerstown, worked for the sheriff’s office for four years. He is the father of two children.

"[El-Shafey] was truly a professional employee that was well respected by his peers and supervisors with the detention center and sheriff’s office family,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Friday.

“I am deeply and profoundly saddened by the death of Correctional Officer First Class James A. El-Shafey,” Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner said in a statement Friday. “My heart goes out to his wife, Jacklyn, and their two daughters. To lose a husband and father at such a young age is devastating. To James’ colleagues at the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, I offer deepest condolences in this time of grief.”
