LUMBERTON, N.C. — A 65-year-old state prison inmate says he was handcuffed when officers attacked him, causing him to be hospitalized for four days.
Citing hospital records, the Charlotte Observer reports that inmate Morlai Sesay suffered fractures to bones in his face and skull following a Feb. 21 incident at Lumberton Correctional Institution, a medium security prison.
Officials say officers were merely trying to subdue Sesay after he’d pushed a sergeant. Sesay tells the newspaper the officers were escorting him to a drug test when, unprovoked, they tripped him, kicked him and hit him with batons.
State prison spokesman Keith Acree says an investigation by other prison officials did not find any inappropriate use of force.
Sesey, who is serving time for breaking and entering, is scheduled to be released Aug. 27.
