AUGUSTA — Probation Officer Sherrill Latasha Warren is expected to make a full recovery after being shot at the Augusta Probation Office on Monday.

According to a Georgia Department of Corrections news release, Warren has been with the department seven years.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate shooting that left Warren injured and a probationer dead.

Pat Morgan, GBI special agent in charge, said the officer was attempting to take Travis Berrian, 29, into custody around 4:15 p.m. when they began to struggle over a gun at the office at 901 Greene St.

Brian Owens, Georgia Department of Corrections commissioner, expressed his gratitude for the quick response from police.

“Our law enforcement partners have been a source of great support, both during and after the incident, and our appreciation for their actions goes beyond words,” Owens said in the news release.

Berrian has a history of criminal activity, including being a suspect in at least two separate homicide cases.

According to a Statesboro (Ga.) Police Department news release, Berrian was a suspect in the June 30 homicide of Michael Anthony Riley, 51, at Riley’s Statesboro home. Police had already charged four people including Terrance Ray Griswould, 28, of Augusta; Riley’s wife, Antoinette Riley; her daughter, Katrina Ledford; and Tarell Momon, who has been in prison since 1996.

The news release said Warren was attempting to place Berrian into custody for the active murder warrants when he shot her in the abdomen and he was fatally wounded.

In Richmond County, Berrian was listed as a suspect in the November 2010 double homicide of Angela Brooks, 19, and Nancy Cushman, 17. Police said the women were shot execution style in a wooded path near Twiggs Street and Laney-Walker Boulevard. Charges were never filed.
