TEHACHAPI, Calif. — A central California prison guard and inmate are both being treated at outside hospitals after officials say the inmate repeatedly stabbed the correctional officer.

Correctional Lt. Brian Parriott says 41-year-old Agustin Garcia attacked the officer Tuesday morning at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi. The officer’s name hasn’t been released.

Parriott says Garcia hit the officer in the face with a cup of hot water then stabbed him in the shoulder, neck and back of his head.

Other guards used batons and fired hard foam rounds to break up the assault. Two other inmates helped stop Garcia.

Garcia has a fractured skull and broken eye socket.

He’s serving a life sentence from Kings County for attempting to murder a peace officer.

The prison houses about 3,800 inmates southeast of Bakersfield.
