MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — After a 21-day quarantine, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio welcomed back a detention officer who had recently been visiting family in Sierra Leone.
AZ Central reports that Moses Kalawa was cleared by the CDC upon his return into the U.S., but Arpaio ordered him to stay away from all Sheriff’s Office facilities for a further three weeks.
Kalawa was paid during his time off.
As of Saturday, 1,187 people in Sierra Leone have died of Ebola and more than 4,000 have gotten sick, according to the CDC.
According to WHO, Ebola has an incubation period of 21 days and anyone who doesn’t show symptoms during that period is considered to be safe.
Arpaio said Kalawa was cooperative with the decision. He came to the U.S. through a refugee program 16 years ago and has been with the sheriff’s office for nine years.
