SEWARD, Alaska — More than 60 inmates were involved in a riot on Tuesday at Alaska’s maximum security prison.
According to local news station KTVA, the riot began Tuesday night when inmates “barricaded the entry to their housing unit and began destroying property.” The DOC spokeswoman Sarah Gallagher says the inmates barricaded themselves to protest waking up at 8 a.m. for cell inspections.
The prison was immediately placed on lockdown and about 35 officers from other facilities responded to assist COs and staff.
No one was injured during the riot, but some inmates were “exposed to non-lethal chemical agents,” Gallagher says. Inmates were assessed by medical staff after the incident.
The riot caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to computer lines, cameras, interior glass, fire suppression systems and plumbing.
