STERLING, Colo. — Sterling Correctional Facility is on lock down Wednesday after multiple inmates attacked four correctional officers, who suffered facial fractures and punctured eardrums.

The melee broke out Tuesday in the prison’s dining hall, according to a news release by Mark Fairbairn, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Staff were examined and emergency treatment was administered by on-duty medical personnel. The injured officers were taken to the hospital by ambulance and other correctional staff.

The corrections department has released few details.

It’s not clear how many inmates were involved or if any of the offenders were injured and how long the battle lasted. It is also not known how prison staff ended the melee.

“At this time the facility will remain on lock down as the incident is under investigation,” Fairbairn said.

He declined to answer any questions about the case.

The Sterling facility is one of Colorado’s highest security prisons. It is where the state’s death row inmates are held. Numerous inmates have been murdered at the prison over the past decade in prisoner-on-prisoner attacks.
