RIKERS ISLAND, N.Y. — Recently obtained surveillance footage shows several inmates brutally attacking a corrections captain on Thanksgiving.

New York Daily News reports that Captain Awais Ghauri, 31, was making the rounds with two other captains inside the Otis Bantum Correctional Center when an inmate, 33-year-old Jason Reid, suddenly punched him and knocked him down.

RIKERS THANKSGIVING BEATDOWN: this exclusive video was sent to me showing a captain at #Rikers island walking through a unit in OBCC. You can see an inmate attack, then others join in. The captain is 31 and was treated for bruising and cuts to the face. The department says they are investigating.

Ghauri was left to fend for himself after he was separated from his colleagues. Just as the CO took control of the fight, two other inmates jumped in and assaulted him.

"This captain was not helped - as a matter of fact, staff retreated from the area," Correction Captains Association President Patrick Ferraiuolo told WABC.

Ghauri was taken to a hospital with lacerations to his left cheek, multiple lacerations in his mouth and a long laceration on the left side of his neck.

An investigation is ongoing.
