LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An off-duty corrections officer was hit several times in the head with his own baton by an alleged shoplifter during a struggle at a mall.

WDRB reports that on Wednesday, Jolene Manthei, 36, was allegedly shoplifting at a Kentucky mall. When the off-duty officer attempted to arrest her, she “took a swing” at him and took off running.

The officer pursued the suspect before he was reportedly kicked and hit by her. At one point during the struggle, she managed to snatch the CO’s baton and struck him with it repeatedly in the head.

The CO was eventually able to get the baton back and overpowered the suspect, but not before striking her several times with the baton. A police officer who happened to be at the scene helped the CO apprehend Manthei.

Manthei was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

She faces several charges, including second-degree assault on an officer.
