ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla — A corrections officer was killed in a crash while heading to work.

Zephyrhills Correctional Institution Officer Destiny Grooms was trying to turn into the complex when another driver rear-ended her car, sending her into oncoming traffic, WFLA reports.

Grooms died from her injuries. The driver, identified as 32-year-old Timothy Hurtt, suffered minor injuries.

Fellow officers who have had close calls where Grooms was killed have started a petition to ask the Florida Department of Transportation to look into installing a turning lane into the facility, which will enable employees to turn into the complex without impeding traffic flow.

Florida Highway Patrol reports three accidents and a hit-and-run have happened near that area.
