PHILADELPHIA — Governor Tom Wolf passed a law last week that aims to boost officer safety in Pennsylvania prisons.
Kristopher’s Law is named for Kristopher D. Moules, an officer at Luzerne County Correctional Facility who died in July 2016 when he and an inmate fell down an elevator shaft during an altercation.
Kristopher’s Law requires monthly checks of elevator construction, maintenance and inspection via a new elevator safety board, according to The Citizens’ Voice.
The law was proposed by two Pennsylvania state senators, Lisa Baker and John Yudichak.
“This is an occasion cloaked in sadness, because of the young man of character and courage we lost,” The Citizens’ Voice reported Baker said during the signing. “But there is a measure of consolation that steps have been taken to prevent a similar tragedy in the future.”
