Bill designating NJ COs as police passes

The bill will add “police” to county COs’ titles

By Corrections1 Staff

SUSSEX, NJ — County corrections officers will now be known as “correctional police officers” under a new bill.

According to Advertiser News South, the bill will add the word “police” to every county COs’ title. A bill was enacted last year that changed the titles of state COs.

County COs serve as first responders and can be assigned to outside operations in the event of public emergencies.

The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Parker Space, has passed the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee.

“This bill helps clarify the powers that county corrections officers already possess and eliminates any confusion over their authority,” Space said.
