CLEVELAND — A juvenile and a sheriff’s deputy suffered injuries Monday night after a large fight broke out inside the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center, officials said.
A “big fight” broke out about 7:30 p.m. in one of the detention center pods, Cuyahoga County Juvenile Judge Denise Rini said in a text message. Rini said that one of the housing unit’s in the jail was vandalized.

Cuyahoga County spokeswoman Mary Louise Madigan said 12 juvenile inmates were involved. Five were taken to the main Cuyahoga County Jail in downtown Cleveland, where they will be separated from adult inmates, Madigan said.
Seven others remain in the juvenile detention center, Madigan said. They were separated from the regular population, Madigan said.
The fight prompted a large response from the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department, Cleveland police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. More than 20 cars surrounded the building as a county SWAT team went inside to quell the fight.
Medics carted at least one stretcher into the building, which also houses the county juvenile court.

Quincy Avenue between East 93rd and East 100th Street was shut down for about three hours, but has since been re-opened.
A sheriff’s deputy responding to the disturbance suffered minor cuts and was taken to MetroHealth for treatment. The juvenile injured during the disturbance also suffered minor cuts, but it is unknown whether he was injured in the fight or the SWAT team response, Madigan said.
Madigan said no inmates escaped and the situation was under control in under three hours.
