Kentucky Department of Corrections Press Release

BURGIN, Ky. — Northpoint Training Center (NTC) Warden Don Bottom received the “Warden of the Year” Award at the 2015 Department of Corrections (DOC) Awards Luncheon held September 9 in Louisville.

Warden Bottom is a 23-year veteran of the DOC and began his career at NTC as a correctional officer. He has held various positions during his tenure to include Deputy Warden at Blackburn Correctional Complex (BCC) and NTC and Warden at BCC.

A true servant of the Commonwealth, Warden Bottom is dedicated to his staff, his institution, and his community. He consistently recognizes staff for their achievements by presenting deserving staff a Warden’s Coin he designed to acknowledge excellent work. He also hosts an event that brings staff and their families to the facility for a day of fun and fellowship.

Warden Bottom is highly focused on honoring our nation’s veterans. He was presented the “Patriot Award” by the Office of the Secretary of Defense to acknowledge his support of employees participating in America’s National Guard and Reserve Force. He also brought to fruition a vision for a veteran’s dorm, the first in the state, where inmates who once served their country can belong to a structured environment that promotes honorable behavior as well as offers counseling and programs specific to their needs.

Providing training opportunities for staff is one of his top priorities. Warden Bottom implemented a Northpoint Future Leaders Program for those interested in moving into leadership positions and a Mentoring Program that pairs tenured staff with those new to the profession.

Warden Bottom has allocated funding for renovations of the firing range and an expansion of the Corrections Emergency Response Team (CERT) obstacle course. He also developed a plan to bring a regional training center to NTC that is now under construction, providing a valuable asset to central Kentucky institutions.

The mission of Northpoint Training Center is to promote safety for the citizens of the Commonwealth by operating an efficient, adult male, medium security institution. Its main purpose is to provide a safe, secure, humane environment for its residents and to prepare incarcerated felons for a successful reintegration into society through the use of constructive classification, education, employment training, program and treatment services, and social programs.

Through Warden Bottom’s leadership the institution excels and moves forward into the 21st century dedicated to this mission.
