LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. — A corrections officer fatally shot herself outside the prison where she worked Tuesday morning.
Police told NBC New York that the unidentified woman died at the hospital after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Witnesses said the 47-year-old officer was allegedly arguing with an ex-boyfriend outside Queensboro Correctional Facility before she opened fire and turned the gun on herself, DNA Info reported. The gunfire missed the man and hit a parked car and passing car.
Rafael Macias, who was driving a car that one of the bullets struck, told DNA Info he witnessed a female corrections officer “shooting at a guy.”
“I was making a left turn and the bullet hit the passenger’s side door. I heard six shots in total,” Macias said.
An investigation is ongoing.
