SACRAMENTO — California State Prison, Sacramento officials are investigating the suspected homicide of an inmate Thursday morning, marking the second deadly attack in three weeks there.
Luis Giovanny Aguilar was in a prison day room when two other inmates, Anthony Rodriguez and Cody Taylor, allegedly attacked him, according to a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Corrections officers used foam baton rounds “to quell the incident” after Rodriguez and Vasquez ignored commands to get down on the ground, according to the statement.
Aguilar then was taken to the prison hospital, where he died from injuries sustained in the attack.
Corrections officers recovered one “inmate-manufactured weapon” from the scene. No officers were injured in the incident.
On Nov. 25, a similar attack unfolded at the same prison when two inmates attacked a third, killing him.
Rodriguez and Taylor are being held in solitary confinement while officials investigate their involvement in the attack.
Both Rodriguez and Taylor have prior convictions related to manufacture or possession of a deadly weapon by a prisoner, while Rodriguez has a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon by a prisoner and Taylor has a conviction for attempted murder by a prisoner.
California State Prison, Sacramento, also known as New Folsom Prison, is a high-security prison that houses more than 2,100 inmates.
