Mo. inmates complain prison is too cold now that AC units are installed

ST. LOUIS — Inmates say the Workhouse jail is now too cold after AC units were installed to combat the heat.

Five temporary air conditioning units were installed July 17 after inmates were heard calling from prison windows saying it was too hot and there was no AC, KMOV reported.

Mayor spokesperson Koran Addo said the prison staff were inundated with inmate complaints about how cold the prison is. One inmate was allegedly caught breaking one of the cooling pipes with a broom handle. Addo said they reached out to the AC company to see if they can offer a solution.

“We’re going to see if they can install thermostats on them so that the staff can more regularly monitor the temperature and keep the inmates comfortable,” Addo said. “We don’t want to be cruel, we just want to run a good facility.”
