DUBLIN, Calif. — Four sheriff’s deputies were charged Tuesday for encouraging an inmate to throw bodily fluids at other inmates.

CBS SF reported that the four deputies facilitated and allowed an inmate to throw feces and urine on other inmates in the maximum-security jail.

Sheriff Gregory Ahern launched the investigation in January after staff brought up the alleged misconduct. The investigation focused on incidents that happened between the summer and fall of 2016. After determining the misconduct was criminal, Ahern turned over the investigation to Eden Township detectives.

Ahern said in a statement Thursday that he is “deeply disturbed and saddened” by the alleged misconduct and criminal behavior.

DA Nancy O’Malley said that the deputies “directed, facilitated, enabled and committed sadistic and terrorizing acts against several men whose protection fell directly within the responsibility of their positions as correctional officers.”

“The conduct of these four defendants violates the law and there is no rational explanation for their actions aside from abject cruelty and a disregard for the humanity of the inmates,” O’Malley said.

According to the Associated Press, the Alameda County DA announced that each deputy faces multiple assault charges. Deputy Stephen Sarcos has resigned and Deputies Sarah Krause, Justin Linn and Erik McDermott are on administrative leave.
