JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An inmate who failed to return from work-release was taken into custody after a standoff with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office SWAT team.

News 4 Jax reports that James Bailey surrendered to the SWAT team after barricading himself inside a Westside home for several hours.

“We received a call from the Department of Corrections that they were tracking a suspect who did not return to his stated incarceration terms. And he is a felony suspect that has several warrants that are confirmed. We were able to locate him at a residence up the street,” said Lt. Terrence James.

Others in the home were removed safely by SWAT.

“Patrol tried to pick him up first, but [the inmate] barricaded himself inside. We were able to detain two individuals that were with him in the yard and once we were unable to make contact with him and get him to respond, then we called SWAT,” James said.

After several hours, SWAT was able to convince Bailey to surrender peacefully.
