TAYLORSVILLE, S.C. — A South Carolina inmate who escaped from prison while taking out the trash in back in custody.
The inmate escaped from a detention center Thursday evening and was arrested Friday morning, local news station WSOCTV reports.
Inmate Jason Mullen, 33, was helping take out the trash with two other inmates and a detention officer when he ran off towards a community college.
Mullen stole a truck that was left in the parking lot of the school with the keys still in the ignition.
Officials found Mullen in a muddy field off of a highway and discovered the stolen truck stuck in the mud. When police approached Mullen, he was attempting to free the truck but was unsuccessful, so he left it behind and ran.
Police used K-9s and a drone to track Mullen but were initially unsuccessful. A bloodhound was later able to pick up his scent and track him to an abandoned mobile home. Mullen was arrested and charged with one count of escape from a detention facility and felony larceny of a vehicle.
Mullen said he ran because his daughter is sick and apologized. He’s being held on a $100,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
