ATHENS, Greece — Greece's Justice Ministry says a guard has been suspended at the country's largest prison, after a female inmate from Serbia escaped with the help of a male visitor.
The 43-year-old woman, awaiting trial for her alleged involvement in a spate of armed robberies on jewelry and clothing stores in Athens, broke out Thursday of the maximum security Korydallos prison in the country's capital.
A Justice Ministry statement said a female prison guard was assaulted and suffered minor injuries during the escape, but had been suspended from her duties for violating "prison procedures." The male accomplice also escaped.
Armed robbery and other violent crime have surged in Greece since the start of its major financial crisis in late 2009.
