Staff at the Hamilton County Jail are taking extra measures to prevent contraband from getting inside

CINCINNATI — Following an inmate’s heroin overdose in December, staff at the Hamilton County Jail are taking extra measures to prevent contraband from getting inside.

WCPO reports that an intense sweep Monday didn’t turn up any heroin, but one of the ten K9s used to search the facility did find marijuana in an inmate’s cell.

The inmate that died in December was Daniel Davis, and staff are still perplexed on how he got a hold of the heroin. Investigators said Davis hadn’t left the jail in two years and never had visitors.

In addition to the K9 search, staff are also getting extra training on new scanners like the SecurPass. The department will also employ enhanced tactics at intake, conduct random drug searches and utilize their scanning device more thoroughly.

They are also aiming to analyze trends within busts and intakes to better break up drug trafficking in the facility.
