ALBUQUERQUE, NM — The New Mexico Department of Corrections says it is cracking down on people smuggling Suboxone into prisons. It’s a drug used to help people rid themselves of their heroin addiction, but it’s illegal to bring into state prisons.

Last year, the Security Threat Intelligence Unit confiscated 600 strips of Suboxone. They’ve found it in trash cans, the mail and even on the side of the highway, where inmates are out picking up trash.

Prison officials said the problem is getting worse and that they’re concerned. Just recently, one inmate was caught with 125 strips in his stomach, which had to be surgically removed.
