Contraband hidden in ice cubes, catapulted over jail wall

Warm weather is bringing out old contraband tricks as inmates convince outsiders to bring them drugs

CLONDALKIN, Ireland — Good weather is bringing out an old contraband trick – freezing drugs inside of ice cubes to be thrown over jail walls, which makes for easy delivery once the ice cubes melt.

The Irish Mirror reports that ice cubes have been found containing cocaine and ecstasy.

Allegedly, the brightness of the sun reflecting off of the ice makes it impossible for warders to spot the contraband as they patrol the yard.

“The ice cube method of drug smuggling has been around for a while now but there has been a massive increase in use in recent weeks due to the hot temperatures we’ve been having,” a prison source said.

“The inmates are using it to their advantage and getting people on the outside to fire ice cubes over in catapults.

“It then lands on the netting and melts. Prisoners will use any method they can to get drugs into jails and this is the most popular at the moment.”

Another way the inmates sneak in contraband, according to the source, is in fruit by peeling back the rind and replacing the meat with drugs.

Last month, a drone was flown over prison walls in an attempt to deliver contraband.
