VICTORVILLE, Calif. — Nine people were injured Monday evening after fights broke out among inmates at a federal prison in Victorville, officials said.

Six staff members and three inmates sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said in a news release.

San Bernardino County firefighters sent five ambulances and two engines to the “mass casualty” incident at the United States Penitentiary Victorville on the 13000 block of Air Expressway, the Fire Department said. Roughly 1,200 male inmates are housed there.

Emergency crews took four people with moderate injuries to hospitals, the Fire Department said.

The incident triggered “modified operations” at the high-security prison, though details were not available.

“At no time was the public in danger,” the bureau said.
