COOS COUNTY, NH — A billion-dollar tech company that works with correctional facilities across the U.S. will no longer require them to eliminate in-person visitation for inmates and their families.
International Business Times reports that the decision comes a month after they published a scathing article about the company’s practice of eliminating face to face visitation for inmates and profiting off of the practice through video visitation.
Three separate lawsuits have been filed against Securus involving their replacing in-person visitation with video visitation, which was described as unfair, expensive and potentially illegal. The visits cost as much as $20 for a 20-minute call, with jails receiving commission on each call.
Securus chief executive Richard Smith released a statement Monday, saying that the company had amended its contract language so that it will no longer obligate jails to remove “person-to-person contact” in favor of its video technology.
