SC parole agency wants more officers to cut caseloads

The new officers would cost $2.6 million a year in taxes

COLUMBIA, SC — The South Carolina parole agency is requesting to add 44 new officers to help better manage caseloads.

The State reports that the agency originally requested 75 officers, but Gov. Haley only included 44 new agents in her executive budget. The agency cut down their request to match Haley’s number.

The new officers would cost $2.6 million a year in taxes.

At present, each parole officer oversees 82 offenders. The requested officers would cut caseloads down to 75 per officer.

Agency director Jerry Adger says he will ask for more officers in the future, hoping to cut caseloads down to 50 per officer, as recommended by the American Probation and Parole Association.
