ROCK HILL, SC — A Rock Hill city jail correctional officer revived an inmate who tried to hang himself in a cell on Wednesday, according to a police report.
Police say the 42-year-old inmate had ripped his shirt to create a noose. The shirt was attached to the cell door and the inmate placed the noose around his neck, the report states.
The incident happened just after 5 p.m.
During a routine cell check, the correctional officer found the inmate unresponsive, according to the report. The officer revived the man and emergency medical workers responded. The inmate was responsive by the time EMS arrived.
Executive Officer Mark Bollinger, spokesman for Rock Hill Police, said the inmate is now on suicide watch in the jail – meaning officers are checking on him more frequently.
Normal cell checks in the facility are done regularly, about every 20 minutes, for the safety of inmates, Bollinger said. If the inmate does not post bail and is transferred to the Moss Justice Detention Center in York, those correctional officers will be notified of the inmate’s suicide attempt in Rock Hill, Bollinger said.
Rock Hill’s jail cells are clear of any materials that inmates could use to hurt themselves or others, Bollinger said. Inmates are not allowed to keep certain clothing such as belts that could be used to hang themselves.
The police department did not release the name of the inmate who attempted suicide. Officials said he was in jail on Wednesday on a burglary warrant.
