JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Authorities say a Florida inmate is in critical condition after fighting with officers, who twice used a stun gun to subdue him.

Jacksonville sheriff’s officials say 44-year-old Paul Testa fought with officers during his arrest and court appearance Monday.

Chief Tom Hackney with the sheriff’s office says Testa was arrested early Monday on charges of criminal mischief and trespassing after a neighbor complained that he was in the backyard fighting with a dog.

Hackney says Testa was combative after he was booked and that officers used a stun gun to restrain him. Hackney says Testa became angry again after realizing a judge committed him to a mental hospital.

Officials say officers again restrained Testa, who became unresponsive and was sent to the hospital.

Sheriff’s officials are investigating whether excessive force was used.
