PENDLETON, Oregon – Corrections officers were forced to deploy pepper spray and fire a warning shot to break up an inmate altercation.

A portion of the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution remained under partial lockdown Friday, according to Oregon Live, following a fight between three inmates. Prison authorities reported that the inmates refused verbal directives to cease fighting, which was then followed with pepper spray.

When that still didn’t deter the inmates, a warning shot was fired into a designated safe area. The shot finally brought an end to the altercation.

There’s no report of any injuries, CO or inmate, but a similar incident occurred in the yard of another medium-security prison in August 2011. A CO in Tower 2 picked up his firearm to prevent an inmate from being killed by others who were beating him; the inmate that was shot survived.
