BRIDGETON — A corrections officer at the Cumberland County Jail was suspended on Friday for allegedly using excessive force on an inmate during an incident in March, according to county officials.

The officer’s name is Michael Fowlkes, of Millville, according to Cumberland County Deputy Administrator Kim Wood.

Fowlkes — who is suspended with pay — has been administratively charged with “conduct unbecoming” and “improper or excessive use of force,” according to Cumberland County Jail Warden Bob Balicki. Fowlkes faces potential termination from his position.

County and jail officials declined to comment on the details of the incident.
